Where business is heading

A reflection on technology shifts and a practical question: what work, if any, should AI support in a business?

In our experience, major shifts in technology tend to follow a similar pattern.

We use the progression from newspapers to radio, television and the internet as an illustration. In our reading of it, the businesses that learned the new standard early tended to gain an advantage.

Today, we would treat a strong online presence as close to expected rather than optional.

Where AI might fit

AI gives a business another tool to assess. Start with the job it would do, the information it would use and who would check the result.

An augmented business tool is the route through which Genesis helps you build and take ownership of the work. It begins with how the business works, rather than with a tool selected in advance.

In our experience, most of the attention goes on what AI can do. Far less goes on whether it fits the business at all.

Count the work around the tool

A tool can look quick in a demonstration. Before calling it a time-saver, count the steps it may remove alongside the checks, handovers and oversight it would require. If those steps have not been mapped, the saving is not established.

Fit the tool to the work

Start with a defined job, the records it uses, the decisions it needs and the points where a person must check the result. Then assess whether a tool can support a step without obscuring its source or ownership.

The Audit is our paid diagnosis of how your business actually works. We interview the people involved and open the records the work depends on. The Full Audit examines the whole business within the agreed scope; the Focused Audit examines a specifically agreed part or decision.

Both produce a written Findings Report and an Action Plan that sets out the recommended changes in order, who is responsible for each and how the business will know each worked. We then take your people through both in a working session.

Within the agreed scope, we would assess whether a chatbot could capture a structured account, whether another tool could search approved records and show the source behind an answer, and whether a check could flag missing or conflicting details. The auditor would test each flag against the underlying records and own each finding.

Decide from the evidence

Start with the work you may want AI to support. Map the steps, information, boundaries and checks before choosing a tool. The Audit gives Genesis a defined way to examine that question and set out what should happen next.

Start with a conversation.

Before any work begins, we learn how the business runs and say honestly whether there is a real opportunity to help.
